#30 — Sick Days And Another Tornado

Janie,

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been sick like this. It was bad. When we had our phone call the other day I thought it was over.. it was only just beginning. Only now, days later am I starting to feel somewhat settled. But to be totally honest, I had been dreaming about taking a sick day (or two). Just to lay in bed and do a absolutely nothing. Well I got what I asked for.. but more. Only there wasn’t much laying around doing nothing, more tossing and turning from extreme discomfort. Was it worth it?

….

Yes.

Before our stomachs had a chance to make a full recovery, the storms had come again. Another tornado, headed our way. The sirens blaring at 3:30pm wasn’t much of an inconvenience. I had to wake up Olga just a tad early from her nap which was only disappointing because it had taken her an unusually long time to fall asleep that afternoon. Oh well. I’ll still take an afternoon tornado over the terrifying  night-nados. We were well prepared this time too. We had our shelter put together in plenty of time.

A very heavy solid wood table with nugget couch walls reinforced with random chairs and side tables.

Little Bear, a lantern, and blankets on the inside for an extra cozy atmosphere. The tornado never came close but this was good practice for the girls (and us). It seems that we’ll be taking cover pretty regularly for the duration of this season. I’m excited and uneasy. It’s my dream come true and worst nightmare.

Anyway.

I went to go see the Blues vs Red Wings with Yulia, Ginny, and one of her friends. I was thinking about you because of course I was rooting for Detroit - which I got plenty of grief for. This led me to rant about how wonderful Michigan is and how I’m trapped here in miserable old St. Louis.. etc. But at the end of the night, after the Wings tragically lost (just seconds away from victory then forced into overtime), Ginny and I decided to sign up for aerial silks lessons… even though for Ginny it was mostly the wine talking haha but starting in May we’ll be back at my old studio in the city.

I’m not the only one signed up for classes though! Because after months of her begging to go to the “swimming pool store”, we caved and enrolled Sunny at Foss Swim School. They had a 50% off deal so this might be the only session we do because they are NOT very affordable over there.. at least compared to Big Blue. I’m very sad we live too far away from them now. It was cheap, very fun, and the instructors were great.

Update on swimming lessons:

Sunny cried the ENTIRE time. I’m talking as soon as we arrived and went into the dressing room she lost it and tried to escape by crawling under the stall door. Anyone on the outside saw a couple of arms and face of desperation get sucked back inside followed by shrieks of horror. She cried all through class but surprisingly still participated and even let the teacher hold her during drills. With chattering teeth and whimpers she still accepted high-fives and powered though submersions. After so many tears it’s a wonder the pool hadn’t overflowed. And then, as soon as class was over and we started to head out of the pool room, Sunny asked to get back into the pool and was very sad that we had to wait a whole week to come back. Sheesh.

Overall, the facility was clean and nice with a play area next to the large window for waiting parents. But I have to say, Big Blue has the better curriculum, and way more flexible with scheduling. Having the option to drop into whatever classes you can make that week rather than commit to the same time every week for 10 weeks is just too much for this stage of life we’re in. I hope Big Blue opens a location closer to us some day.

Anyway, more storms on the way this weekend. Here’s to hoping we don’t get sucked away.

-Lydia
