Number Eighteen

Lydia,

I’m so sorry that Olga’s sleep patterns are so terrible. Sleep deprivation is the worst. So much so that it’s actually utilized as a torture method and for brainwashing in cults… so, truly, it’s no joke. I’ll be praying for you that you are able to get more rest.

As far as Christmas goes, it’s always pretty tricky to choose good gifts. I want to get them things they will enjoy for more than a week, things that won’t turn into more clutter, things that will last a long time. Last year I got them each a book–a Beatrix Potter story collection for Alder and a Mother Goose treasury for Poppy–both are great quality books and beautifully illustrated. These are things that, in theory, they can hold onto for years to come. This year I still haven’t decided what to get for them. I’ll keep you posted! Also, I don’t do a purge to make room for new things, I usually just wait til the mood strikes me at some random point in the year and then I go through and get rid of whatever I feel we don’t need anymore.

Outside time seriously feels like the answer to everything sometimes. Cranky kids? Go outside. Bored? Go outside. Exhausted? Go outside. Nature has been such a significant part of my life in so many ways. I’m so glad you’ve found it healing and nurturing as well.

I can’t wait to go on a hike with you in a few weeks! Canteen wine sounds like the perfect trail drink hahah, I’m all for it! It will be so good to spend time together in person. We have so much to catch up on, despite these weekly letters.
